Watch: Jack Lowden is Morrissey in first trailer for upcoming ‘England is Mine’ biopic

The world got its first glimpse today of the much-anticipated Morrissey biopic “England Is Mine” after the release of the trailer for the film that stars Jack Lowden as the young Steven Patrick Morrissey in the lead-up to the formation of The Smiths. The film, directed by Mark Gill, is set to be released in the U.K. on Aug. 4. No word yet on a U.S. premiere.

As you can see from the two minutes of footage that debuted today, the film follows a young, and quite shaggy, Morrissey as he tries to follow his musical muse in late-’70s/early-’80s Manchester, first teaming up with future Cult guitarist Billy Duffy (Adam Lawrence), then — as the trailer ends — getting that fateful knock on the door from Johnny Marr (Laurie Kynaston).

This might be very good if the bloody lawyers don’t get in the way. Seems to be the way of The Smiths.

  2. I can’t wait to see this. That moment when Morrissey opens the door and Johnny Marr is there is pure magic.

  3. From the trailer it appears that the Marr/Moz hello at the door might be the end of the movie. If so it’s a nifty way to avoid obtaining rights to the music which Moz would never allow. If this is the case then I’ll pass. I’m interested in the music he made with Marr and as a solo artist, I’m not so obsessed with him that I need a movie about his early life of navigating, as he saw it, in a world of ‘crashing bores’.

    • Agreed, although I’ll take things a step further and that while I too am interested in the music he made with Marr I have virtually none in his solo career. Over all tt is difficult for me to think of a more unappealing subject for a bio-pic.

  4. First I am hearing of this! Can’t wait. It will probably suck.

  5. Does anybody know what song that is? The punk rock one, not ‘This Charming Man’ of course. I tried to shazam, but the voice over… any help appreciated!
