Listen: The Smiths debut unreleased ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ (Take 1)

There’s not yet been an official announcement of the upcoming expanded reissue of The Smiths’ 1986 album The Queen is Dead, yet the band’s Facebook page today debuted one of the bonus cuts on that set: the so-called “Take 1” of “There is a Light That Never Goes Out.”

Update: Full details of The Smiths’ 3CD/1DVD reissue of The Queen is Dead

The song is now available via all major streaming services, including Spotify (see below). It’s very similar to the beloved end result on The Queen is Dead, but does include Morrissey singing the original outro refrain, “There is a light in your eyes and it never goes out.”

Based on now-deleted Amazon listings in the U.K., the 2CD/1DVD reissue is due out Oct. 20 and will include a 2017 mastering of the original album on one disc, and a second disc featuring 13 demos, mixes, alternate takes and B-sides. There was no indication of the DVD’s contents.

That’s the new cover art posted above.

Listen to the unreleased version of “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” below via Spotify.

  1. This version has been out for years on bootlegs but it’s great to finally have an official release. The singing on this version is just sublime. Best song ever.
