R.E.M.’s 4-disc ‘Automatic For the People’ reissue to include demos, Greenpeace live set

R.E.M.’s multiplatinum Automatic For the People will mark its 25th anniversary with a 4-disc reissue this November, with the original 1992 album joined by a live disc featuring the band’s famed Greenpeace benefit concert at the 40 Watt Club, another disc of 20 unreleased demos and a Blu-ray featuring a surround mix of the album and its accompanying videos.

Though not yet officially rolled out by the band, the details of the reissue appeared on Amazon Germany today — and were revealed by The R.E.M. Timeline as well. The reissue, which had been announced earlier this year, is due out Nov. 10 via the Craft Recordings reissue arm of Concord Bicycle Music, which in late 2015 signed a worldwide licensing deal for the band’s Warner Bros. albums.

The reissue will include:

  • A disc featuring the original 12-track album.
  • A third disc of 20 unreleased demos, including early versions of many of the songs that ended up on Automatic, and some that didn’t.
  • A fourth disc, a Blu-ray, that includes a surround mix of the full album, along with its accompanying music videos, and press kit.

R.E.M. released the dark, introspective Automatic For the People on Oct. 5, 1992. It was the band’s second largely acoustic record in a row, and, despite once again not touring behind its new album, the period surrounding Out of Time and Automatic marked R.E.M.’s greatest commercial success.

Automatic spawned the singles “Drive,” “Man on the Moon,” “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite,” “Everybody Hurts,” “Nightswimming” and “Find the River.”

  5. Love the press kit video – “Automatic”

  6. Please don’t fuck up the remaster, please.

  7. And the Limited Edition contains a 5th disc of remastered B-sides?!

Uh, can’t get too greedy, I guess. :/

  8. Yeah, B-Sides and Remixes get no love. Bring on the box set.

  9. So what are the chances track 15 on the Demo disc 3 is “Photograph” by Def Leppard? With substituted mandolin riffs of course.

  10. I’m thinking “Photograph” will be the song they did with Natalie Merchant that came out on the “Born To Choose” compilation in 1993. The question is, will this be the version with her or an R.E.M.-only version?
