The absolute best of Depeche Mode: All 209 songs ranked by Slicing Up Eyeballs’ readers

Today we reveal the results of Round 4 of our new Slicing Up Eyeballs readers’ poll series, a ranking of all 209 songs recorded and released by synth-rock legends Depeche Mode from the band’s poppy beginnings in 1981 all the way up to the present day.

A quick refresher: We asked readers to vote for up to 25 of their favorite songs recorded by Depeche Mode, choosing from a ballot that listed 209 singles, album tracks, compilation cuts and cover songs. Not included in this poll: Live versions or remixes, which, for this band, probably merit their own separate poll.

RELATED: Playlist of all 209 of Depeche Mode’s songs, ranked — minus 3 that aren’t on Spotify

Based on a total of 91,106 votes — significantly more than our polls of the R.E.M. and The Smiths catalogs, but about 10,000 shy of our survey of The Cure’s oeuvre — the full results are presented below.

As you can see, the No. 1 song topped the list by a comfortable 94-vote margin. Not surprisingly, the Top 10 features nine singles and just one album track. And unlike what occurred in our last poll, of R.E.M.’s output, every single song in Depeche Mode’s considerable catalog received fans’ votes.

As always, thank you all so much for participating.

And now, the results:

  1. Aphotic Empyrean

Thank you for your efforts putting this together. We all have our favorite songs but true fans will accept Enjoy the Silence as a top pick. I am a Get The Balance Right top pick person, but I still love the list results

  2. Thank you for this!
I suggest posting them in reverse order next time. Once I knew the top 10, I lost interest in the other 199.

  3. Nice list there. It’s definitely understandable that Enjoy the Silence is Number 1. I love how “Blue Dress” and “New Dress” are at 56 and 57, respectively.

  4. Very cool poll indeed, appreciate your efforts. Shake The Disease should be #1 but I’ll let my fellow voters slide on that one.

  5. Fpmip LOL. Really good list, but very surprised New Life is so low.

  6. Solid, if somewhat predictable list. DM has always been a great singles band. 18 of the top 20 were released as singles.

Their albums weren’t quite as consistent, but glad to see selections from Black Celebration and Violator ranked high as well. Was surprised to see “Route 66” ranked outside the Top 30. My favorite B-side.

  7. Great poll. Thanks for doing it.

Wish I’d realised that this website was (thankfully) back up and running before a week or two ago. I’d have certainly voted on this at the time.

I do, however, agree with most of the tracks in the top ten and they’d have got my votes also.
Never Let Me Down Again should, IMHO, always top any DM list, but I’m happy with Enjoy The Silence.

Was wondering though, is ‘Where’s The Revolution’ missing? Not that I’d have voted for it though.

Please consider a New Order or Joy Division poll next!

  8. Thanks.

Hmm. Not sure I missed that. Even tried CTRL+Fing for the words.

    Sorry. My bad.

  9. This was fun! Looking forward to the next poll. How about Bowie, Siouxsie or The Furs next!?

  10. Also fun to see New Life and Dreaming of Me next to each other.

In general, the top 10 or 20 bore no surprises. I’ll dissent and say I believe NLMDA is way over rated. Probably Everything Counts, too, although I betray myself by admitting I had chills hearing it live on this latest tour.

  11. “Oberkorn” .. FTFY

    (Big thanks for this poll!)

  12. Selecting my favorite DM songs was a lot fun. Very happy to see two Black Celebration songs in the top 10 along with “Never Let Me Down Again”. My all-time fav is “Nothing” from Music For The Masses . But regardless of the rankings I just love Depeche Mode

  13. Very cool to vote and to read the results. Was curious to see how many songs sung by Martin would be in top 25 (were 2) and if/how many post-Wilder songs would in be there (was 1) as well. Thanks for putting together Matt.

  14. I wanted to see how things shook out album-wise so I wrote a quick script to scrape the data and threw this together:

    • Interesting graph there. I would have expected this type of curve except that I would have expected Speak and Spell to do better.

    • Interesting!
SOFAD scores lower than I thought it world. But, that was also the feeling I got when the list was published.
      A lot of 80’s DM fans voting I suspect…
Glad to see that A Broken Frame is doing quite well. Often I hear the contrary.

  15. So, about Should Be Higher. Just right where it is, lower, or…?

  16. Matt: How does this sound? Grab the top 10, 15 or 20 each from Depeche Mode, The Cure and The Smiths and throw those into a poll…And let the people vote.

    • Sounds fun. Is that the holy trinity? Add New Order/Joy Division? Who else belongs in the conversation? R.E.M., right? Perhaps that is the question…

Write in your top 10 “college rock/alternative” bands

  17. Brian Harris

The absolute bottom of the list should’ve been “It’s Called a Heart” with “Poorman” right above it.

  18. Agent Orange is only 109 while it is very original and so fascinating. But I like the whole ranking, esp finding everything counts and shake the disease in top10

  19. A little late to the party (just saw this today), but love those polls on several of my favorite 80’s bands (i.e. The Smiths, The Cure, DM & New Order). ”Dreaming of me” is one of my all-time favorite DM song, so I think it should have been way up there in the Top 25, but they have so many great songs that it’s impossible to come up with the perfect Top 25. ”Little 15”, ”New Life” and ”Love in itself” are other great ones that would belong in there too IMO, but then again which ones do you take out of there… Great choices overall though!

  20. Greg Hingsbergen

You’ve got Any Second Now listed twice, at # 128 and #168.

    • Because there are 2 versions, first one is actually called “Any Second Now (Voices)” on the album whilst the other one is just instrumental.

  21. Really, FLEXIBLE that high?

  22. Sacred being that low is a disgrace, it’s top 20 all day long

  23. The Child Inside should be in the top 10 lol

  24. I am surprised Monument is so low – i thought it was a well known song because it was on that major 90s cover album (i think Gus Gus covered it) and i really enjoyed that cover..

  25. Overall good list. First off, even though it is not my personal favorite, I believe “Enjoy the Silence” deserves the top spot as it is such a timelessly magic track. However, not seeing “Personal Jesus” in the top three is questionable. Moreover, seeing “What’s Your Name” above “Any Second Now” or even “Big Muff” is laughable. Finally, “Dream On” is ranked criminally low.

  26. Could this poll be continued/include the Memento Mori songs?
