Richard Hell and the Voidoids’ ‘Blank Generation’ to be expanded with unreleased material

Richard Hell and the Voidoids’ 1977 debut Blank Generation — a landmark chapter in the history of New York City punk — will receive an expanded 40th anniversary reissue next month, with the original record paired with a disc of previously unreleased studio takes and live tracks.

Rhino Records will release the expanded Blank Generation in 2CD and 2LP formats on Nov. 24 at participating independent music retailers as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday. The release will be limited to 5,250 copies of the CD edition and 4,500 copies of the vinyl pressing, according to the label.

The reissue features the original album, newly remastered by Greg Calbi of Sterling Sound, on one disc, plus a second disc featuring 12 bonus tracks that includes unreleased alternate studio versions, rare “live bootleg” tracks from the band’s first show at CBGB’s in 1976, and out-of-print singles.

Hell formed the Voidoids in 1976 after stints in Television and the Heartbrakers, enlisting Robert Quine (who later played with Lou Reed, Matthew Sweet and more), Ivan Julian and Marc Bell (the future Marky Ramone). The band remains best known for its punk anthem “Blank Generation.”
