U2 announces ‘Songs of Experience,’ North American arena tour — hear new song

U2 today formally announced the release of the band’s next album, Songs of Experience, a 13-song companion to 2014’s Songs of Innocence — a record that will see a fairly conventional release rather than be forced into every iTunes user’s library like its predecessor.

Along with details of the new album, U2 announced 15 dates of a North American arena tour next May, and premiered another one of the album’s songs, “Get Out of Your Own Way” (hear it below).

Songs of Experience, U2’s 14th studio album, will be released by Interscope Records on Dec. 1 in CD, vinyl and digital formats, along with deluxe editions. The record is produced by Jacknife Lee and Ryan Tedder, with Steve Lillywhite, Andy Barlow and Jolyon Thomas.

Fans who pre-order the album will receive three songs now: the previously unreleased “Get Out of Your Own Way,” first single “You’re the Best Thing About Me” and the album version of “The Blackout.”

The tour, dubbed the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour, follows this year’s Joshua Tree stadium tour, and begins May 2 in Tulsa, Okla., and runs through June 29 in Newark, N.J. It’s not yet known whether more dates will be announced, but the run of arena concerts are spaced out enough to allow multiple-night stands to be added or concerts in other cities.

Tickets for the tour go on sale at 10 a.m. local time Nov. 20 via the Ticketmaster Verified Fan program, which requires buyers to register by Nov. 18 to be able to purchase tickets. There will also be various pre-sales ahead of the general on-sale; head over to U2.com for full details.

Below, hear the new song, and check out the tour dates and album tracklistings.

  1. Wow, this song is terrible.

I don’t usually bother to comment on these guys but they really need to call it quits and stop shoving their corporate garbage down people’s throats. U2 were once a somewhat interesting group but they really are just going through the motions these days, at least REM had the good sense to know when that time had come and call it a day. Also, let’s not forget, Bono is a tax avoiding hypocrite who preaches, that’s enough to boycott them anyway.
