Morrissey cancels Boston concert as another U.S. tour comes to an ignominious end

For the second time in a year, a U.S. tour by Morrissey has stumbled to a halt amid medical-related cancellations. This afternoon, Boston’s Orpheum Theatre announced Moz’s tour-ending concert on Thursday is being canceled “due to illness in the touring party” — the same excuse given two days ago when the singer scrubbed his Philadelphia show.

Between those two would-be concerts, Morrissey also backed out of Tuesday night’s scheduled appearance on “Late Night with Stephen Colbert.” Morrissey is next scheduled to perform at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles on Sunday, and is slated to appear on “CBS This Morning” on Dec. 16. After that, he opens an 11-date tour of the U.K. and Ireland in February.

Thursday night’s cancellation is the third of Morrissey’s 16-date U.S. tour in support of the just-released Low in High School; he also pulled the plug on a concert in Paso Robles, Calif., last month because because it was too cold — temperatures were in the 40s — and the venue’s on-stage heating system wasn’t working.

Morrissey in recent years has seemingly grown into and embraced his reputation as a fickle concert canceler. This past spring, he canceled his third concert in San Antonio, Texas, in just six months after his voice went out. And almost exactly a year ago, his late-fall U.S. tour was beset with cancellations and reschedulings — and rescheduled concerts that ultimately were canceled, too — after keyboard player Gustavo Manzur fell ill just before a planned show in Boulder, Colo.

  1. I feel this may be because of his statements in support of Kevin Spacey.

    Shows stopped, tour cancelled.
    Typical Moz.
    Typical Moz.
    Typical Moz.
He started something, and now he just won’t tour.

  3. Somebody send Moz & Co. some antibiotics or essential oils. They need to boost their immunity to the hardships of touring.

  4. Stop me but I think I heard this one before.

  5. Good thing Jacky’s not in his touring band.

Good Riddance! At least it didn’t even happen.

  7. This is why I stopped supporting Moz. He is brilliant musical but a complete douche bag.

  8. Looks like we got the best of him in Chicago. That performance was outstanding and I’m happy to have seen this tour. MOZ is a strange bird of sorts but wishing him or anyone else in the band (anybody really) ill us just kinda evil. If you believe they’re making up things, don’t want the revenue accolades of touring, etc. I’d welcome a reasonable explanation… Matt/SUE editor included. Quoting The Smiths with “stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before” (as it relates to cancelled events) is especially disconcerting considering the legacy of this 80’s-ish artist and the prevailing content published on this site.

    • Thank you, but no. If this was a normal thing for touring artists in general it would be easier to empathize. What Moz does is baffling and sad and disrespectful to his fans.

  9. The boy is sick.
    Are you all f@cking crazy??
    Give me a break.
    He just can’t.
    Love you Morrissey.
