The Cars make Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — but Kate Bush and Depeche Mode snubbed

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame today announced its class of 2018, a list that includes third-time nominees The Cars alongside Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues and Nina Simone. Additionally, Sister Rosetta Tharpe will receive the Award for Early Influence, organizers said.

Not making the cut this year? Kate Bush, Depeche Mode and Eurythmics, which now join the list of ’80s-era nominees — The Cure, The Smiths, The Replacements — that were snubbed by the Hall of Fame

This year’s other nominees that were passed over: J. Geils Band, Judas Priest, LL Cool J, MC5, The Meters, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Link Wray and The Zombies.

To be eligible for nomination, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to their year of induction. For the Class of 2018, that meant 1992.

  1. Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, and The Cars??? What a joke. Kate Bush deserved the honor (if it’s really an honor).

    • when Kate is nominated there is no space for others is another level- BON JOVi ??? no.- i dont agree , ok the Cars are super, but Erythmics are very special too, who made this list?? kate rules , she s a witc, an angel , a storyteller, she wirtes, produce, play, dance(and HOw she does all these things….) (goodstories,) have ever listened (with open ears…cit.TKI -and heart) to her before voting?? dave

    • Exactly!! Very disappointed

Guess Kate didn’t make a deal with God?

Oh, that was a bad joke. I am SO sorry.

  3. The past inductees are heavily skewed towards classic rock and R&B stylings. Many of the music historians, enshrined artists, and industry-types who actually get a vote are senior citizens. Until they die off and get replaced by Gen Xers, don’t expect to see too many Slicing Up Eyeballs favorites getting inducted.

  4. i dont want your mailing list no more .- pls cancel me you understand only what u want to.- kate snubbed , bet she’s laughing because she doesnt care at all.-

  5. Happy for The Cars and hoping for a performance.

    • This. Lots of inevitable griping about who’s not going in, but it’s great to see the Cars honored. They’d be in on the strength of their first record alone — and the second was maybe even better.

  6. Bon Jovi?

I mean, seriously. What justification can there possibly be for that?

  7. I give up. They cater to the arena rock crowd of the 70s and then any aftermath band that towed the line like bon jovi. Bands that were innovative and essential to rock history, like kraftwerk the smiths or the cure are passed by. That’s not showing the public any historical value. Instead it’s high school all over again and only the popular kids win. How embarrassing and useless.

  8. Kate bush? How about the Cure?

  9. Nina Simone is a Goddess.

Just not in the genre of Rock and Roll.

  10. They ought to remove “Rock and Roll” from their name. Something like “American Pop Culture Hall of Fame” might be more appropriate.

  11. There’s someone still alive that likes Dire Straights??

Yeah. Wonder which “trumpet playing band” got pushed aside on the grounds of not being “what they call rock and roll”?

  12. Really happy The Cars got in. Disappointed about Mode but understand to a degree as there’s still not acceptance of that style. That’s got to change if rap is getting in. Too many great bands to overlook.

The one that really irritates me is Judas Priest. Yes, they’ve had some different lineups, but they were the dominant and majorly influential metal band for years during the peak of that style.

So hate Bon Jovi music. Just drivel.

  13. It’s disappointing but I don’t think Kate Bush had any major commercial success in America which is part of the criteria for induction.
Depeche Mode being passed over a second year running is mind boggling, after all, as we speak, they’re out there right now, touring, ticket sales stand at 1.3 million, more than Ed Sheehan apparently, but instead they give it to Bon Jovi, a throwaway soft rock outfit whom if you’ve heard one song you’ve heard them all and what exactly are they even doing right now in comparison to Depeche Mode?
The Cars? Yeah cool, I wouldn’t be a big fan but fair enough.
I no longer see the point of announcing 19 artists or whatever it is every year only to induct the 5 least deserving of the bunch, just announce the 5 they see fit to induct and be done with it.

  14. I’m not sure why anybody is even remotely concerned with who makes the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame and who doesn’t. The very concept behind it is a complete joke.

  15. Why anyone even gives a fuck about this lame “institution” is a mystery to me.
