Stuck in Istanbul, Peter Murphy again delays opening of 15-night San Francisco residency

Still stuck in Istanbul — and now blaming a diplomatic spat rather than the short-lived U.S. government shutdown — Peter Murphy has again rejiggered plans for what is now a 15-night residency in San Francisco, moving the opening night to Tuesday and rescheduling more shows.

According to the latest update on his Facebook page:

“After an unforeseen and unanticipated delay, Peter is nearing the top of the visa application list at the US Consulate. Due to a brief diplomatic spat last year between the US and Turkey resulting in a temporary mutual ban on visa issuances to each country, a backlog of Turkish applicants has seen Peter’s own caught up in the pile.”

Because of this, tonight’s and Sunday’s concerts are rescheduled for later in the run, and Murphy now is expected — provided he can get to the United States — to open the run on Tuesday night with a full performance of Deep and a special encore of selections from Love Hysteria.

See the current schedule below.

Murphy’s plans for a San Francisco residency have been trouble-plagued from the start. The concerts originally were announced to take place last June and July, but were rescheduled to 2018 after issues arose with the singer’s vocal chords.

The concerts will find Murphy performing “a retrospective of his greatest solo albums in their entirety,” as well as three concluding nights devoted to Bauhaus material, at which Murphy will be joined by has former bandmate David J to play bass in his band.

The rescheduled run was supposed to have started this past week, but, on Monday, The Chapel said it was preemptively re-rescheduling the Jan. 23 and 24 opening of the residency, and combining them as a single show on Feb. 1, due to “unforeseen governmental delay in the processing of Peter’s visa application including the shutdown of the federal government.”

Then, Friday’s concert was canceled as Murphy remained stuck in Istanbul.
