London’s Meltdown festival today revealed the first round of acts selected by The Cure’s Robert Smith for this year’s series of concerts, a roster that includes My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, The Psychedelic Furs, Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses, and The Church.
Also hand-picked by Smith: Placebo, The Libertines, Manic Street Preachers, Mogwai, Deftones, The Notwist, Alcest, 65daysofstatic, Mono, The Anchoress and Kathryn Joseph.
This year’s Meltdown, the 25th anniversary of the festival, runs June 15 to 24 at the Southbank Centre in the U.K. capital. Many more acts are still to be announced; visit the Meltdown site for full performance details on the announced bands, as well as ticket information for each concert.
Smith’s involvement in Meltdown comes as The Cure prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year, with a major concert this summer in London’s Hyde Park with Interpol, Goldfrapp, Editors, Ride, Slowdive and more; plans for a new documentary on the band; and a just-announced pair of Record Store Day releases, including a Mixed Up sequel with new remixes by Smith himself.

Wow! Had no idea Robert Smith was a fan of The Church. Nice! Steve Kilbey (lead singer/bass player/lyricist of The Church) was only recently involved in a very limited round of Cure tribute performances in Oz and knocked his renditions of a few Cure classics out of the park.
Yeah hes mentioned this atleast once before (loving the church) plus i know he’s a huge psych furs fan and also luvs duran duran….
