Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser to tour with Massive Attack next year in celebration of ‘Mezzanine’

Turns out Elizabeth Fraser’s brief re-emergence last month was no fluke: The Cocteau Twins singer is going on tour with Massive Attack next year as the trip-hop group celebrates the 21st anniversary of Mezzanine — which featured Fraser on three songs, including “Teardrop.”

The tour opens Jan. 28 in Glasgow, and features 16 announced shows in Europe — see full dates below — along with plans to hit 11 cities in North America. Those dates will be announced Friday, but, in a press release, the group reveals the cities they’ll play: Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, St. Paul, Minn., San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.

UPDATE: North American dates have now been announced; see the full itinerary below.

Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja calls the tour the group’s “own personalized nostalgia nightmare head trip” in the press release. The shows will feature an audiovisual production “reconstructed from the original samples and influences.” More guests, in addition to Fraser, are still to be announced.

Since the demise of the Cocteaus in 1997, Fraser rarely has performed publicly. In 2012, she played three concerts tied to an appearance at the Meltdown festival in London, her first-ever solo shows and her first full concerts in 14 years. Last year, she appeared publicly at Royal Albert Hall to discuss the Cocteau Twins’ album Blue Bell Knoll with Grant.

And early last month, Fraser performed a short set in London, singing traditional folk songs, at an invite-only event hosted by The Society of the Golden Slippers.

Below, see Massive Attack’s European tour dates, and the video for “Teardrop.”
