Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ to be reissued on red vinyl with ‘original’ white sleeve

Joy Division and the band’s famed art director Peter Saville have teamed up with London fashion retailer Goodhood to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Unknown Pleasures by reissuing the album on ruby red vinyl and in a white sleeve “resembling the original design idea.”

According to a post on Joy Division’s official Facebook page this morning announcing the collaboration with Goodhood, “While the album’s black sleeve has become one of the most iconic designs in popular music history, the original design was supposed to be white-with-black accents.”

The reissue, due out June 14, one day shy of the album’s anniversary, will be pressed on 180-gram ruby red vinyl “with an alternative white sleeve resembling the original design idea.”

The image used for the cover of Unknown Pleasures, chosen by Bernard Sumner, was an image of radio waves from a pulsar created by radio astronomer Harold Craft in 1970 and found in the Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy. Saville reversed the image, so that it was white lines on a black background rather than black lines on a white background.

Joy Division’s campaign with Goodhood will include an entire collection of apparel and homeware baring the new Unknown Pleasures image. Those items will be available form June 27 to July 11.

Gotta pay the legal fees, I reckon.

  3. On the new New Order Movement box set DVD (Granada Studios TV sessions) you can see two people in the audience with Unknown Pleasures t-shirts on. One is black on white like the above, the other white on black. Saw that the other day and thought the black on white version looked cool.

So can we look forward to Joy Division oven gloves? (Apologies to Half-Man, Half-Biscuit)
