The Cure enlists Pixies, Deftones, Mogwai, Throwing Muses for Pasadena Daydream Festival

The Cure will host and headline a daylong music festival on the golf course next to the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., over Labor Day weekend, with Robert Smith and Co. joined by hand-picked supporting acts Pixies, Deftones, Mogwai, Throwing Muses and more.

The Pasadena Daydream Festival will take place Aug. 31 at Brookside at the Rose Bowl with a lineup that also includes The Joy Formidable, Chelsea Wolfe, The Twilight Sad, Emma Ruth Rundle and Kaelan Mikla.

Tickets — $149 general admission and $299 VIP — go on sale at 12 p.m. PDT on Friday, May 17, at pasadenadaydream.com. A $1 charity fee will be added to the cost of each ticket, with that money going toward music and arts education organizations and local charities, including Mr. Holland’s Opus, Little Kids Rock, Free Arts for Abused Children, Inner-City Arts and The Painted Turtle.

For the Pixies, the festival comes 30 years after the band joined Love and Rockets in opening for The Cure at a handful of stadium dates on 1989’s Prayer Tour. And Mogwai and The Twilight Sad both are no strangers to sharing a bill with The Cure, with the former having played on the band’s 2004 Curiosa Tour — a traveling festival itself — and the latter opening the group’s 2016 American tour.

Smith first divulged word of a Cure-curated festival — first planned for the New York area, but the location fell through — when he called into the “Debatable” program on Sirius XM Satellite Radio’s Volume channel earlier this month to discuss the 30th anniversary of Disintegration.

Smith dropped the news of the festival when the hosts asked him about the band’s recently announced headlining slot at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.

“We’ll be announcing another one later this month, which will be a really special one, actually, because we’re curating it,” Smith said. “So it’s going to be on the West Coast. There’s going to be about 10 other acts, all hand-picked. I just wanted to do something a bit like (last summer’s 40th anniversary concert at London’s) Hyde Park. Something a bit celebratory.

“It isn’t going to be a Disintegration show, I’ll be very clear about that. It’s going to be just a celebratory show with a load of artists who all in their own right deserve to headline festivals.”

In announcing the show today, Smith — in a news release from promoter Goldenvoice — says, “Hyde Park was a fabulous experience, the whole day was really magical, and we wanted to create something with a similar celebratory vibe for this summer.”

I love this band. Everything they do has so much meaning and thought behind it. The best Alternative band…..er aside the Banshees…lol!!!!

  2. Finally a reason to drive 1500 miles.

  3. $149/$299 with $1 going to charity. Seems like a good ratio.

  4. Saw The Cure with The Pixies in ‘89 at Dodger stadium. Great show of course and this one 30 years later will equal it no doubt, they continue to kill it live.

I saw The Cure with Love and Rockets and The Pixies at Giants Stadium in ’89. “Let’s get Love and Rockets on the bill, Robert!”
