The Cure’s bassist Simon Gallup was unable to travel to Japan for the band’s set at the Fuji Rock Festival tonight due to a “serious personal situation,” but the show went on with a natural fill in: his son Eden Gallup, who’s also Simon’s bass tech and plays in the band Violet Vendetta.
Robert Smith acknowledged, but did not explain, Simon Gallup’s absence during The Cure’s set, but the band did tweet out a statement afterward saying they’d been “very reluctant to disappoint our wonderful Japanese fans, and after much discussion, we decided to go ahead with our ‘Fuji Festival’ headline on Sunday with a very brave and very excellent Eden Gallup filing on on bass.”
The Cure’s statement goes on to say that Gallup will be back for the band’s remaining summer festival dates, which resume with a performance in Moscow on Saturday.
