Oingo Boingo’s Danny Elfman to perform at Coachella music festival in April

Former Oingo Boingo frontman and Oscar-nominated film composer Danny Elfman will make a rare concert appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April, appearing on a bill toppped by headliners Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott and Frank Ocean.

Elfman is scheduled to perform on the two-weekend festival’s second night — April 11 and 18 — and is listed in bold on the second line of Coachella’s poster, alongside Flume, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Disclosure, 21 Savage, DaBaby and Summer Walker. Other acts on the bill this year: Lana del Rey, Calvin Harris, Run the Jewels, FKA Twigs and Lil Uzi Vert.

Just what Elfman will be performing is not specified, though it’s safe to say it won’t be a set of Oingo Boingo music. He hasn’t performed with the band since its breakup in 1995, and hadn’t sung in public at all until he began performing occasional concerts of his Tim Burton film scores in 2013.

At those orchestral performances, which he has staged sporadically in recent years, Elfman sings some of the material from “A Nightmare Before Christmas.” In 2018, he also brought former Oingo Boingo guitarist Steve Bartek onstage to perform “Dead Man’s Party.”

Just what Elfman has in store for Coachella remains to be seen — though the festival’s page for Elfman does include an audio clip of the Elfman-sung “What’s This?” from “A Nightmare Before Christmas.”

UPDATE: Elfman tweeted that his performance will be titled “Danny Elfman… Past, Present and Future! From Boingo to Batman and Beyond!”

  1. AWESOME

  2. He should bring the boys from Boingo back for that portion for sure. They are still capable, could benefit a bit financially and fdeserve it, especially Bartek. Great news though.

  3. I recognized a grand total of six names in that very long list of performers. Went to US Festival ’83 – first and third day. Kind of different in that every single act was getting some level of airplay, either on radio or MTV. Not sure I want to spend a hot weekend (hopefully) discovering my new favorite band.

    • Agree this may as well have been a list of random words from the dictionary.

I’ve seen an awful lot of amazing bands, arguably some of the greatest. But live, Oingo Boingo may have been the best. They didn’t need elaborate sets or planes crashing into the stage. They just got up there and tore through number after number.

I really hope if Danny is going to play *any* O.B. numbers he ropes the boys in to do them justice. Maybe, just maybe if his hearing is better and he has a good time, he might consider just one more for the road?
