Two key drummers of the early post-punk era — The Cure’s Lol Tolhurst and Budgie of Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Creatures — have formed a new band called LXB that could release its already-recorded debut album before the end of this year, the two musicians announced during a joint interview on Sirius XM’s Volume channel on Friday.
Budgie and Tolhurst appeared on the “Volume West” show with hosts Lyndsey Parker and AFI’s Davey Havok for World Goth Day, announcing their new LXB project, as well as a podcast they’re calling “The Bleak End,” and reminiscing about the Bat Cave and the early days of The Cure and the Banshees.
As for the new musical project, the duo — who met when The Cure opened for the Banshees on the Join Hands tour in 1979 — teamed up with producer Jacknife Lee, and have recorded 13 songs with guests that include Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and Idles guitarist Mark Bowen.
“Obviously, it’s two drummers, so it’s very, very rhythmic,” Tolhurst said of their new music.
Budgie added: “It’s a real amalgamation of some early Cure and Creatures. It’s neither of those things in whole, but… it sounds very ‘the spirit of 77.'”
The project initially was conceived as a trio including Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus, Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets, and it sounds like he could still appear on the record. “Initially it was the three of us that hung out and did some stuff, and then Kevin had to go and play with Bauhaus,” Tolhurst said.
The record likely won’t come out until late in the year, they said. “We want to tour with it, obviously, so nothing’s happening on that front until next year,” Tolhurst said
