RELEASE: Closer, “Transmission,” “Atmosphere,” “Love Will Tear Us Apart”
BACKSTORY: Rhino Records this week releases a 40th-anniversary clear-vinyl pressing of Joy Division’s Closer as well as 12-inch singles of “Transmission,” “Atmosphere” and “Love Will Tear Us Apart” on 180-gram vinyl.

The Pretenders

RELEASE: Hate For Sale
BACKSTORY: This week sees the pandemic-delayed release of Chrissie Hynde and Co.’s first new album in four years and 11th overall under The Pretenders banner, a 10-song collection produced by Stephen Street.

Wire

RELEASE: 10:20
BACKSTORY: The CD edition of Wire’s new collection of outtakes from 2010’s Red Barked Tree and 2020’s Mind Hive will be released this week. The set originally was planned as a vinyl release for the delayed Record Store Day.

Big Country

RELEASE: Essential Big Country
BACKSTORY: This three-CD box set, due out this week, is advertised as collecting Big Country’s “hit singles, deep album cuts, fan favorites and more,” from the band’s first hit “Fields of Fire” up through material released in 1991.

The Go-Go’s

RELEASE: Beauty and the Beat
BACKSTORY: The 1981 debut album from The Go-Go’s receives a new vinyl reissue this week. The record features “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “We Got the Beat,” “How Much More,” “This Town,” “Automatic” and more.

Tin Machine

RELEASE: Tin Machine II
BACKSTORY: The second and final album from David Bowie’s Tin Machine, originally released in 1991, is reissued this week in a limited-edition of 5,000  pressing on 180-gram silver vinyl “packaged in a spot varnished sleeve.”

The Heads

RELEASE: No Talking, Just Head
BACKSTORY: The 1996 album by the David Byrne-less Talking Heads — with vocals by Johnette Napolitano, Michael Hutchence, Debbie Harry, Andy Partridge, Richard Hell and more — is reissued this week on CD.
