Speaking to Slicing Up Eyeballs from a San Francisco recording studio last week, David J discusses his new mortality-themed album ‘Not Long For This World,’ his recent theatrical work, the ‘sense of completion’ he feels following the Bauhaus and Love and Rockets reunions — and his recent performances with an L&R tribute act.

David J is poised to release a new solo album called ‘Not Long For This World’ — featuring new songs and covers of tracks by Smog, Ed Harcourt, Tom Waits and Dennis Wilson — and he’ll revisit his Love and Rockets tenure by playing two California shows next week with tribute act Luv’n Rockets.
Daniel Ash — he of ’80s darkwave trifecta Bauhaus, Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets — turns 54 today, and to mark the occasion, we present this little nugget: It’s a promo for MTV’s ’120 Minutes’ featuring a cue-card reading Ash and his Love and Rockets bandmates David J and Kevin Haskins that aired sometime around 1986.
For a band with just one album and a handful of EPs and singles, Bauhaus spinoff Tones on Tail already has been the subject of more than its share of compilations, and now comes another: ‘Weird Pop,’ a double-vinyl best-of that features at least one previously unreleased cut and several other rarities.
Back in March, we brought you a stream of ‘I Spit Roses,’ the first new single in more than six years from Peter Murphy — and now, with the release of the former Bauhaus leader’s new album ‘Ninth’ just a month away, his label is offering a free download of the track.
It’s Bauhaus/Love and Rockets bassist David J’s birthday today, and it seems a good as time as any to dig up the video from that one-off classic, The Bubblemen. So here they are, Love and Rockets dressed as giant bees. Dig it.
Tonight’s episode of ‘Dark Wave’ on Sirius XM’s 1st Wave featured rare airings from Concrete Blonde (‘Darkening of the Light’), The Smiths (‘Unloveable’) and David J (‘Girl On Fire’), not to mention true shockers from Theatre of Hate (‘Original Sin’) and Stewart Copeland and Stan Ridgeway (‘Don’t Box Me In’).
The highlights of tonight’s ‘Dark Wave’ on Sirius XM’s 1st Wave include The Swans’ cover of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart,’ a dash of German synthpop from Cetu Javu, The March Violets’ classic ‘Snake Dance’ and a nice Bauhaus/David J/Love and Rockets run toward the end of the show.
