There’d been much speculation about who, if anyone, would fill in for the late Kurt Cobain should Nirvana choose to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Last night, the surviving members of the band drafted a quartet of women to do that job.

Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe inducted Nirvana into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night at a massive ceremony at the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn, declaring of the genre-shaping alt rock act that, “This is not just pop music. This is something much greater than that.”
Universal Music today announced that the forthcoming 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana’s third and final album, 1993’s In Utero, will be released in multiple formats on Sept. 24, including a 3CD/1DVD “Super Deluxe Edition” box set that will feature more than 70 “remastered, remixed, rare, unreleased and live recordings.”
Following in the footsteps of the 2011 monster reissue of Nirvana’s breakthrough Nevermind, the band’s follow-up record, the Steve Albini-produced In Utero, will receive a similar 20th anniversary reissue this fall — and the surviving bandmembers are teasing the release with a resurrected promo clip.
Paul McCartney closed out Wednesday night’s marathon 12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief and had a few special guests up his sleeve: the surviving members of Nirvana, who reunited to back McCartney not on one of Kurt Cobain’s songs or a Beatles classic, but, rather, a sludgy new rocker called “Cut Me Some Slack.”
Last night at Seattle’s Bumbershoot festival, The Vaselines capped off their very short run of U.S. dates by inviting former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic on stage to play accordion on the Scottish indie-pop band’s 1987 classic “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam,” a performance you can watch here via Guerrilla Candy.
Flipper is revving back into service this year, with a handful of U.S. dates announced in the coming months along with plans to perform at the South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas, this spring followed by a tour of the U.K. and dates in continental Europe in April.
