Pixies add more European festival dates; ‘big announcement’ due Monday

Pixies

With the once-again-reactivated Pixies promising “a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT on Monday” on the band’s Facebook page, several more European summer festival dates have begun surfacing.

In addition to the band’s previously announced slot at the UK’s Isle of Wight Festival, Black Francis and Co. also will play Where the Action Is in Stockholm, Sweden, with Neil Young, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Duffy; and the  Ejekt Festival in Athens, Greece, with Jarvis Cocker, Klaxons and Royksopp.

The band also will play the twin Hurricane and Southside festivals in Germany, with Social Distortion, Franz Ferdinand and the reunited Faith No More.

It’s not yet clear how many concerts the Pixies are playing this summer, although Kim Deal confirmed to Pitchfork last week that “we’re doing dates in June.”

“There’s some things. I don’t think they’re completely confirmed; that’s probably the only reason why they haven’t been announced. There’s one in the Scandinavia area and maybe one Greece. And then there’s the Isle of Wight one. That’s going to be so cool.”

Deal also declined to characterize the trek as “another big reunion tour.”

“We have somebody overseas who books us. If the booking agent gets enough offers, he goes to the band and says, ‘Guys, I can get you guys a few gigs if you’re into it.’ So that’s what’s happened.”

Presumably we’ll know more come Monday.

Pixies’ confirmed 2009 European festival dates:

June 12: Where the Action Is, Stockholm, Sweden
June 14: Isle of Wight Festival, Isle of Wight, England
June 18: Ejekt Festival, Athens, Greece
June 20: Hurricane Festival, Scheeßel, Germany
June 21: Southside Festival, Tuttlingen, Germany
