Vintage Video: Ramones find ‘Something to Believe In’ with ‘Hands Across Your Face’

Few things are more reminiscent of ’80s pop culture than the type of celebrity do-goodery that sprouted up in the aftermath of the earthquake that smashed Haiti last week, particularly in the form of “Hope for Haiti,” Friday’s star- studded, multi-network telethon featuring George Clooney in the Bob Geldof role, and old hands Bono, Bruce Springsteen and Sting on board to belt out the tunes.

While the cause is certainly vital — we here at Slicing Up Eyeballs World HQ have given to the Red Cross, and would urge readers to do likewise if they have the means — it’s hard not to mercilessly mock a bunch of po-faced movie stars pleading for cash.

Which is why we’re reminded all too well of this classic 1986 Ramones clip for “Something to Believe In,” a concept video of sorts called “Ramones Aid” that lampoons cause celebs like “We Are the World” and “Hands Across America” (which the Ramones spoof as “Hands Across Your Face”) with the help of contemporaries The B-52s, Circle Jerks, The Untouchables, Afrika Bambaataa and many more.

So watch the video, and have a laugh — but remember, this is still a serious issue. If you can, help. The easiest way is to text the word “HAITI” to 90999, which will automatically donate $10 to the American Red Cross’ relief efforts for Haiti.
