Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, David Byrne & Brian Eno earn Grammy nominations

Grammy Award

The nominations for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards were announced last night, and this year’s list features a slew of ’80s college-rock vets, including Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, U2, Elvis Costello, David Byrne and Brian Eno, and Ministry.

Perennial nominee — and frequent winner — U2 racked up a trio of nods, including Best Rock Album for its underperforming No Line on the Horizon and a pair of nominations for that record’s “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight.”

In the Best Alternative Album category, Depeche Mode’s Sounds of the Universe will go head-to-head with Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, the new album from David Byrne and Brian Eno.

Additionally, the Pet Shop Boys’ Yes is up for Best Dance/Electronic Album, Ministry landed a song in a metal category, Elvis Costello’s Secret, Profane & Sugarcane is up for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and Depeche Mode’s somewhat creepy “Wrong” clip landed a nod for Best Short Form Music Video.

The Grammy Awards will be given out Jan. 31

  1. If Depeche Mode win anything, it may affect their status as one of my favorite bands . That last album was crap and deserves NO great reward.

  2. Depeche Mode is great, and so is Sounds of the Universe!

  3. Sounds of the Universe was amazing. Depeche Mode deserve recognition.
