Sirius XM's 1st Wave

Another strong showing from “Dark Wave” tonight on Sirius XM’s classic alternative outlet 1st Wave, as the show’s programmers — it’s now hosted by KROQ vet Swedish Egil — continue to ease up on the repetition, and, just as importantly, keep up the surprises. (Although one has to wonder how The Human League, Sonic Youth and the Ramones qualify as “dark wave.”)

Still, tonight’s show featured rare airings from Concrete Blonde (“Darkening of the Light”), The Smiths (“Unloveable”) and David J (“Girl On Fire”), not to mention true shockers from Theatre of Hate (“Original Sin”) and Stewart Copeland and Stan Ridgeway (“Rumble Fish” soundtrack cut “Don’t Box Me In”). If only 1st Wave was programmed like this 24/7.

“Dark Wave” airs each Sunday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Eastern/7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific.

  1. ahhh the specialty show conundrum… would it indeed be as special if Dark Wave were programmed 24/7? I like to think what makes this show so special is the wait… once a week, late Sunday nights… … A proper DW dormat would take a library of 1000 songs to keep fresh… and there’d still be the symptoms burnout for core rotation artists like Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division etc….

  2. I’d argue that Human League have a few tracks worthy of a darkwave show – Being Boiled, the Lebanon and a handful of tracks from Dare/Love & Dancing would work. But even I tweeted about the odd Louise showing up on the show last night. ;)

However, I’m confused at the choice of generally the only Ministry tracks they program for this show being from With Sympathy, an album so perfectly pop that Jourgensen continually disses. Darkish, yes, but not nearly as dark as the Wax Trax! catalog or the LoRaH and TMIaTTtT tracks.

But as you point out, this is usually the best 3 hours of programming on 1st Wave all week.

  3. How exactly does “William, It Was Really Nothing” qualify as Dark Wave?
