Red Hot Chili Peppers join KISS, Stooges as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees

Red Hot Chlil Peppers, circa mid-'80s

The 2010 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced this morning, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers joining the likes of LL Cool J, The Stooges, Jimmy Cliff, Genesis and the long-snubbed KISS as possible inductees next year.

Artists are eligible for inclusion 25 years after their first recordings were released, which means the Chili Peppers made the ballot their first time up; the band released its debut single, “True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes,” and first album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, in August 1984. Chad Smith, the Peppers’ drummer, tells Billboard: “It’s a real honor to be nominated in our first year of eligibility. Obviously the Hall of Fame has excellent musical taste.”

Also on this year’s ballot: Donna Summer, ABBA, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, The Chantels and The Hollies. The final five inductees will be decided by 500 voters and announced in January. The ceremony is set for March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
