Peter Hook bringing Joy Division ‘Unknown Pleasures’ tour to U.S., Australia

Peter Hook, circa 2010

Having marked the 30th anniversary of  Ian Curtis’ death last May by performing Joy Division’s 1979 debut, Unknown Pleasures, in its entirety, bassist Peter Hook will reprise that feat with a full orchestra this weekend at a U.K. festival before playing the full record in Australia and the U.S. later this year.

Backed by an orchestra and choir, Hook and his band The Light are slated to perform the full  Unknown Pleasures — plus other early Joy Division and Warsaw numbers — Sunday night at Vintage at Goodwood, a festival celebrating “five decades of British cool.” Hook, who’ll handle Curtis’ vocals, already is pre-selling a 2CD live set of the performance.

In September, Hook and Co. — sans orchestra — take Unknown Pleasures on the road, first playing five dates across Australia, followed this winter, our friends at Consequence of Sound today report, by a nine-city U.S. tour that opens Dec. 1 in Washington, D.C., and wraps up Dec. 11 in Los Angeles (see full tour dates below).

To get you in the mood, here’s some video from Hook and Co.’s Curtis tribute in May.

  1. Fuck that, all of of that…
No Bernard, no Steve, no way.
I’m all for tributes, but, but no. Just no, okay!

  2. IS HE SERIOUS?

  3. im still sorta shocked by this. i live near 930, so i could go…i mean JD and NO were some of my all time fave bands ever on earth..but…i’m not sure. i know he wants to honor ian and remember him, i think. he seems like his heart is in the right place in the interviews…bah…i dunno…

what does everyone else think? legit or exploitation? yeah, i really mean that. i don’t want to be a part of the latter if you know what i mean.

  4. Yeah, a tribute would be if all the band agreed. It’s like Ringo doing a Beatles’ tribute for SGt. Peppers….

  5. Personally… I don’t care if it has N.O.’s blessing. I’m going to be in the same room as one of my heroes while he’s playing one of my favorite albums. I understand peoples hesitation but I have blind devotion when it comes to Mr. Hook.

  6. Keep in mind this is the same bastard that forged Ian Curtis’ signature and sold it. He’s not above exploitation.

  7. Kent Butabi

I’d go if he were coming to my town, but I wouldn’t travel accross state lines for it. Now Bad Lieutenant? Definitely.

  8. check all these bell ends out above. wiz wazzing..

Peter Hook was actually part of JD. He can do what the fuck he wants & doesnt have to justify it to anyone!! gwann hooky!!!!!! Jay

  9. No Sumner, no way.

  10. This is pathetic. He’s not even PLAYING BASS, which was the one thing he did with Joy Division.

  11. It’s awful! He can’t sing and he’s not even playing bass. He’s raping and pillaging his own history when he should just leave it be with respect and dignity. It’s a worse idea than From The Jam. CRAP CABERET!

  12. OK. I don’t like this idea at all. At least bands like the Doors and The Dead have most if not all of the remaining members touring with them using guest singers. This would make it more credible as a tribute to me than just trying to make an extra buck.

  13. I wish I could make the Chicago show. Looks like this guy should skip school that day and the next. :-P

  14. I’m going to Chicago show. Barney is on record as hating to tour in USA. Hooky is the only reason I give 2 shits about JD / NO anymore.

  15. All I have to say is Peter Hook and his sons band did right by “Joy Division.”

He didn’t go out there and half wing it. Peter took his time making sure they were on point.

FYI…folks the other two guys have gone on tour before and sang some Joy Division songs.

Thanks Peter for bringing “Joy Division” back!

  16. once in a lifetime experience tonight at the doug fur. no one will ever be ian curtis. thank you for sharing part of your creation with us mr hook.
