Steven Severin: Robert Smith says ‘it’s just a matter of time’ until 2nd Glove album

The Glove, 'Blue Sunshine'

Former Siouxsie and the Banshees bassist Steven Severin says he and Robert Smith have discussed recording a second album as The Glove — the duo’s short-lived early-’80s side project — and that The Cure’s frontman tells him, “It’s just a matter of time.”

In an interview with U.K. site Left Lion (via Chain of Flowers), Severin notes that the main obstacle to writing new songs with Smith is time: “Making space for it means effectively shutting down The Cure for six to nine months. That’s a huge machine with many people depending on it for their livelihoods so timing is key.  One day, I hope.”

The duo recorded 1983’s Blue Sunshine while Smith was doing double duty leading the Cure and playing guitar in the Banshees. Smith was barred by his record contract from singing on a non-Cure album, so the pair enlisted Jeanette Landray to handle vocals — although the album’s 2006 reissue does feature a disc of demos with Smith singing.

In the Left Lion interview, Severin — who is currently on tour performing his new scores for Depression-era films — also dismissed the rumor he once was asked to join the Cure: “Robert would never ask. Why would (longtime bassist) Simon (Gallup) leave?”

SHUT UP! This is huge! I just leapt out of my bed and danced when I read this.

  3. If Smith was barred from singing on any non-Cure albums, why does he sing on Mr. Alphabet Says, for example?

  4. That ‘demos’ album was a bit of a scam. I think RS later admitted the vocals were re-recorded… you could tell anyway.

  5. I’d love to hear what they could come up with! And, YES lxne, why does he sing on “Mr Alphabet says” and “Perfect Murder”???

  6. What would a second Glove album sound like? Part of the allure for me was Jeanette Landray on the first. One-offs are often best left alone, especially after ~26 years or so.

  7. It’s not just the front singer–all is good Keith! Thx! LoveuGodBless, T and J KABBALAH MATTHEWSHEPARD MADONNALICIOUS

    Now is the time then!
Simon left, I’m devastated, but he’s not coming back (at least for a couple of years). it’s time for Steven Severin to join the Cure. He’s always loved playing with Robert.
