Primal Scream taps Kevin Shields to remaster ‘Screamadelica’ for 20th anniversary box set

Primal Scream, 'Screamadelica: Collector's Edition'

Genre-hopping C86 grads Primal Scream will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their landmark record Screamadelica next year with a lavish 4CD/1DVD/2LP box set highlighted by “a new cut of the album” made with the help of occasional collaborator Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine.

Enlisting Shields to help remaster the Primals’ 1991 album alongside frontman Bobbie Gillespie and guitarist Andrew Innes is somewhat ironic, of course, given that Shields’ own much-anticipated reissues of My Bloody Valentine’s two albums have been endlessly delayed. (They’re currently set for release Jan. 24. For now.)

Due out March 7 in the U.K., the Screamadelica: Collector’s Edition will include four CDs that feature the newly remastered version of the album; the previously unreleased Live in L.A., 1991 disc; a CD of original remixes by Andrew Weatherall, The Orb and others; and a remastered version of the four-track Dixie-Narco EP.

The set also will include a double-vinyl edition of the album, plus a DVD featuring the 30-minute “The Making of Screamadelica” documentary and bonus clips from the original “Screamadelica” VHS release. Also included will be a 50-page book, a 12-inch slipmat with the original sleeve design, a replica tour T-shirt and more (see details below).

There also will be a super-limited “white” version of the box, with just 500 copies made, 100 of which will be signed by the band. And for fans who don’t want to shell out for the full box set — it’s currently £105.99 (about $167.50) on Amazon.co.uk — there also will be a 2CD deluxe edition featuring the remastered versions of Screamadelica and the Dixie-Narco EP in “deluxe vinyl replica packaging.”

As for why Gillespie enlisted Shields for the project, the frontman told the NME:

“He’s just really good with sound and frequencies, we thought it was a fun thing to do. Kevin, Andrew and myself went down to the mastering room. Kevin’s the one person in the world that all remastering engineers would hate to see walking into the studio, when we walked in the guy nearly had a fucking heart attack!”

Primal Scream will perform the album — which saw the band trade its jangly indie-pop sound for house-influenced, druggy dance-rock— this weekend in London, followed by tours of Australia and the U.K. in January, February and March (see full dates here).

  1. Hey, tried ordering this and it wont allow it to be ordered to the US. But does allow a bunch of other countries. Any ideas?

  2. Absolutely gorgeous package, but the irony of Kevin Shields doing the remastering is not lost on me…he hasn’t been able to get his own remasters out for nearly three years, plus his hearing is shot from being in one of the loudest bands ever.
