1st Wave

The fairly predictable playlist for “Dark Wave” — the weekly Sunday night “darker side of alternative” show on Sirius XM’s 1st Wave — received a much-appreciated shakeup tonight thanks to guest host Peter Murphy, who managed to slip a barrage of unlikely artists ranging from Antony and the Johnsons to Sxip Shirey into the mix.

Tonight’s show nodded to Murphy’s own legacy, of course, featuring tracks by Bauhaus and Dalis Car, as well as, toward the end of the three-hour set, a pair of back-to-back cuts from Murphy’s new album Ninth. Interspersed with the standard “Dark Wave” fare (The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division) were Murphy-selected tracks by more contemporary acts such as Air, Sarah Fimm and Mew.

Murphy — shown above at an in-store in New York City last week (see more of Kellyann Petry’s photos on his Facebook page) — took the opportunity to spin a few stories, such as how his daughter has turned into a goth, and even played a live take of Amanda Palmer covering Radiohead’s “High and Dry” that he claimed to have recorded on his iPhone.

“Dark Wave” airs Sundays from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Eastern/7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific.

UPDATE 6/13/11: In a post on his Facebook page today, Peter Murphy writes, “I’d like to clarify that my own DJ set for the Sirius XM dark radio show thing was as follows, the other songs outside of this do not represent my own personal choice.” The songs Murphy selected are marked below; a few, including two more Ninth tracks, were not played.

  1. GREAT tunes tonight. Really dug Sol Seepy. Filter was weird on Murphy’s mic though, it wasn’t picking up a split second of his voice at the beginning of words. Unless of course that is how he talks, but it just sounded really strange to me. I love when my fave artists choose playlists, I usually hear something new. A break from the regular same ole same ole.

Thank you thank you to the producers of 1st Wave for getting Peter Murphy for this show! And Peter, ever the theatrical probably didn’t realize the infliction in his speech was going to have the effect it did but it got me to LOL and everyone else’s attention as well – bravo! Some of those artist he played I have never heard of but I found myself smiling through tears while listening to Sarah Fimm – What an amazing evening of music for me. Thank you (deep bow. When can we do it again?!?

  3. This was an amazing show. Just before it started, I dug up my ticket stub from seeing Peter Murphy at The Spectrum in Montreal on April 27, 1988. I forgot all about Dalis Car and look forward to the new release. The playlist was great. I plan to find out more about Sarah Fimm and some of the other newer artists he played. Fortunately, I recorded the show and will be able to enjoy it again and again.

  4. I saw Peter Murphy at the Casbah in San Diego and he was dangerously close and in good form. He blew some kisses at me. Wow, my inner gothling is now sated.

He was pretty frisky, like I read online before I went. He did lose the Pirates of the Caribbean look, in favor for all black and a clean shave. He was passing the mic in the crowd and I didn’t get to make a joke about Eclipse or ask him to play “His Box” or “Canvas Beauty”. A girl can dream. He did play His Box on this list…why can’t he play it live? It would be wonderful live.

Well, Peter Murphy baptizing you with water and blowing kisses while engaging eye contact is pretty powerful stuff. Too bad, he didn’t play at a record show here, I have a lot of his stuff on record it would have been fun to have him sign.
