For fans of Depeche Mode’s 1989 concert documentary “101,” here’s a real treat: An eight-minute promo reel of director D.A. Pennebaker’s footage, labeled “film in progress,” has surfaced, and it includes scenes not included in the final cut. The clip, shown above, is from Mute Films and was posted to YouTube by user chillyamaretto on Wednesday.
The film’s a bit grainy, but it includes footage of DM performing, soundchecking, shuttling about in vans and buses, and doing promotional duties during the 1988 Music For the Masses tour. Plus, you can see Martin Gore buying some country music cassettes at what appears to be a truck stop, and Dave Gahan hashing out just what he’ll say to the crowd at the Rose Bowl (as we all know by now, he settles on “Good evening Pasadena!” — but there were other options).
Oh, and there’s footage of those infamous contest winners and their bus trip across America.
