Slicing Up Eyeballs tapped as new host of Sirius XM’s weekly ‘Dark Wave’ show

We’ve got some big news today on the radio front: Slicing Up Eyeballs — that is, yours truly, site founder/editor Matt Sebastian — has been asked to host “Dark Wave,” the Sunday night show that explores the “darker side of alternative” on satellite-radio network Sirius XM’s classic-alternative station 1st Wave.

Airing every Sunday night from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Eastern/7 to 10 p.m. Pacific on Channel 33, “Dark Wave” had been hosted in recent years by ace KROQ vet Swedish Egil — meaning I’ve got some pretty legendary shoes to try to fill. Each week, I’ll be hand-picking a three-hour set of some choice dark-wave, industrial, post-punk and other decidedly moody music.

My first show airs this coming Sunday. For those of you have Sirius XM web subscriptions, the show will be available as part of the network’s new on-demand service. And if you don’t have Sirius XM, there’s plenty of time to subscribe or check out this 7-day free trial.

To get a flavor of what it’s store, check out my “Dark Wave” playlist from when I guest-hosted the show last year, or take a spin through this month’s Auto Reverse mixtape.

Got any requests or suggestions? Drop a note in the comments below.

Oh, and don’t forget about my Internet radio gig: the Slicing Up Eyeballs Music Hour — an hour-long look at ’80s college rock, then and now — airs every Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Pacific on Strangeways Radio, with replays each Friday at 2 p.m. Eastern/11 a.m. Pacific.

  1. Great news! Congratulations! I will be tuning in. Public Image Limited’s “Theme” would make for a good track to play.

  2. Play me some ‘Lagartija Nick’ by Bauhaus pretty please.

  3. Suddenly I feel even happier about ponying up for a subscription!

  4. awesome!!!!!!!! Congrats! I sadly had to recently switch my satellite to DirecTV, but am going to become an internet subscriber!

  5. Congratulations! Tracks… humm.. how about “Join in the Chant” by Nitzer Ebb. That one is a great, dark, and angry track from the late 80’s.

  6. Excellent news! Your guest-host playlist looks great. I like that you threw in a little industrial. There are multiple “sweet spots” where post-punk, goth, new wave, and industrial meet and you you do a good job of hitting them. Keep the playlist diverse and if you can, introduce us to some great deep tracks that we may have missed from some of the more popular artists.

  7. … as for bands, I’d love to hear more Chameleons, Sad Lovers and Giants, Virgin Prunes, Einsturzende Neubauten, This Heat…

  8. Great news! Sad Lovers And Giants, Chameleons, The Sound, For Against, Snake Corps, Modern Eon, The Names, A Certain Ratio, Abecedarians, New Model Army, Section 25, Felt, The Lucy Show, Killing Joke, Salvation, Opposition, Modern English, The Wake, Crispy Ambulance, B-Movie, Pauline Murray, The Essence…all will be great additions to the show!

  9. Congrats Matt. Well deserved.

  10. Nice work, congrats on the new gig. Methinks “Nothing Wrong” by Red Lorry Yellow Lorry would fit the bill.

  11. That is awesome! But it leaves me thinking, what happened to Swedish Egil?

  12. Congrats! Hope you don’t get too big though after all, it would suck to lose SUE! Just being selfish. No really, congrats on the recognition, you work hard to provide a great resource for people who love the music from the era.

  13. I’m hoping you can dig deeper into The Church catalog, and break the “Under the Mily Way, Reptile, Tantalized, then repeat” cycle.

  14. Congrats. I’ll definitely be listening to your first show this Sunday.

  15. Hey! Excellent news! I religiously listen to First Wave radio and I think Dark Wave has been lacking on the creativity and depth of their programming. Human League is cool, but i’m sure you can come up with much better selections! Play some Curve on Sunday! Thanks and good luck!

  16. Heard the announcement today from Blade. Congrats man!

  17. Thank you all for the very kind words…

  18. Chris Mason

    Like to hear Shriekbaks Nemesis
