Nine Inch Nails announces ‘Hesitation Marks,’ debuts single, unveils North American arena tour

Trent Reznor

Trent Reznor’s resurrected Nine Inch Nails tonight announced it will release a brand-new album titled Hesitation Marks on Sept. 3 — nearly four years to the day after Reznor “retired” the live incarnation of that band with an epic concert at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre.

NIN announced the release — the band’s eighth album, which will bear the catalog number Halo 28 — tonight via Twitter, and it precedes Thursday’s debut of first single “Come Back Haunted,” which is slated to hit U.S. airwaves at 11:30 a.m. Pacific. The album will be NIN’s first since 2008’s The Slip, which was released for free (“This one’s on me,” Reznor said at the time).

UPDATE: The single “Came Back Haunted” leaked, so NIN went ahead and posted it (stream below) — and announced a lengthy fall arena tour of North America called “Tension 2013” (dates below).

In announcing last week that he’d signed to Columbia Records, Reznor wrote:

“I’ve been less than honest about what I’ve really been up to lately. For the last year I’ve been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly fucking great.  This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again.  My forays into film, (How to Destroy Angels) and other projects really stimulated me creatively and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place.  Here we go!”

In February, Reznor announced he was resurrecting NIN with a new lineup that includes King Crimson guitar whiz Adrian Belew and former Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery, and will mount a U.S. arena tour this fall and perform dates worldwide in 2014.

Avery already has quit the band, though, and was replaced by former member Robin Finck.

  3. Batshiz Crazay

Wake me when the song is over so i can resume my day

  4. chrisdigital

Wow, sounds like shit i was recording over 10yrs ago….

  5. One California show only, in L.A., that is really weird.

  6. Dammit Trent, pick up a guitar again. People want more Broken or Downward Spiral, no one is clamoring for another Slip.

  7. yawn.

Anyhow, there’s a great new Skinny Puppy album out now called “Weapon” check it out!

  8. An NIN admirer and appreciator for more than a decade, but this really didn’t grab me at all. Not only has Trent essentially lied to all the fans (the “Wave Goodbye” tour in 2008-09 turned out to be not the final farewell at ALL) but also matured into brilliant film soundtrack work (always knew he had it in him) and then returned with something that sounds contrived, with nothing particular to say, and all produced in a room containing him, Ilan Rubin, Josh Eustis, Alex Cortini, Eric Avery and Adrian Belew. And THIS is what they came up with?? With BELEW in the room??? Am less than excited about a new NIN album.

  9. So the only reason to pay any attention to this new incarnation of NIN has officially quit! I’m very glad this is the case. As interesting as it would be to put Belew in any situation, Trent’s NIN is not the project for him. Phew!
