‘120 Minutes’ Rewind: Concrete Blonde strips down Leonard Cohen’s ‘Everybody Knows’

For this week’s installment of “120 Minutes” Rewind, we present this clip from the Oct. 10, 1993, episode featuring Concrete Blonde offering a stripped-down performance of the group’s cover of the Leonard Cohen favorite “Everybody Knows” — famous, of course, for its appearance in the pirate-radio film “Pump Up the Volume” and its soundtrack.

  1. That’s my dream girl singing there. She was the coolest!

  2. Most definitely! I miss those days. They were a force to reckon with the moment they hit the stage. She’s still amazing now.

Still madly in love with Johnette…

  4. The PUTV soundtrack (on cassette, of course) introduced me to not only Concrete Blonde, but Leonard Cohen as well. And possibly the Pixies – IDR if I was already a fan. Saw them in 1991 when I was 15 and again in 2004. I still have the ticket stubs from both, but the one from 1991 got covered in vomit (mine, at least) and is difficult to read (first time drinking beer – warm Budweiser, nonetheless, and…yeah.). 120 Minutes exposed me to so much good music. Those were the days… Matt Pinfield was the host’s name IIRC. Of course I had to confirm, and yes, he was the host from 1995-1999 and 2011-2013. I got here because I recently did “Joey” at karaoke (crushed it, though I can’t get my voice as low as Johnette so had to change octaves here and there) and posted it on my YT channel (https://youtu.be/pBHyXS6JZ7M?si=joi8bZw-sntiHsSv), and I am adding some “fun facts” to the descriptions of each video. Of course, I was also lured by the “Slicing Up Eyeballs” Pixies reference.
