The prospects of The Smiths all gathering in the same room — forget about a live performance, just getting the four together behind a podium would have been a miracle — were dashed early Tuesday when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced next year’s inductees, a list that did not include the first-time nominees.
After six years of eligibility, The Smiths were nominated today for induction as part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2015, joining a list of nominees that includes Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, the late Lou Reed, Kraftwerk, Sting and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe inducted Nirvana into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night at a massive ceremony at the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn, declaring of the genre-shaping alt rock act that, “This is not just pop music. This is something much greater than that.”
The Replacements may be back, but they’re still getting no respect: The Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2014 was revealed by Rolling Stone tonight, and the ‘Mats, while nominated back in October, didn’t make the cut. Instead, Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, KISS, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt will be inducted come April.
