The Raincoats reissuing 1979 debut on vinyl, playing rare U.S. concerts this fall

Gina Birch and Ana da Silva of The Raincoats

Seminal post-punk combo The Raincoats will commemorate the vinyl-only reissue of its 1979 self-titled debut this October by playing a string of rare U.S. concerts, including the band’s first-ever West Cost dates.

Kill Rock Stars will reissue The Raincoats on Oct. 13 with a single bonus track: “Fairytale in the Supermarket,” the band’s debut single. In a somewhat unusual move, the extra song will open the new edition of the album rather than be appended at the end as a bonus track.

Formed in the late ’70s by singer-guitarist Ana da Silva and singer-bassist Gina Birch, the U.K. act recorded three albums with an evolving cast of players before splitting in 1984. Like The Vaselines, interest in the band from Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain helped lead to a mid-’90s renaissance; Rough Trade reissued the band’s three albums in 1994 with liner notes by Cobain, and the reformed Raincoats released a fourth album, Looking in the Shadows, in 1996, and have performed live sporadically since.

This October, in conjunction with the KRS reissue of The Raincoats, da Silva and Birch will perform four U.S. concerts, including the band’s first-ever West Coast dates, in California and Oregon, plus a show in New York City.
