Elvis Costello to release ‘Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook’ live box set

Elvis Costello will commemorate this year’s revival of his “Spectacular Spinning Songbook” — which debuted during a 1986 trek that saw him choosing setlists onstage via a giant spinning wheel — with a limited-edition box set featuring a CD, DVD and 10-inch vinyl EP culled from the performer’s May 11 and 12, 2011, shows in Los Angeles.

Due out Dec. 6 via Universal Music Enterprises and limited to 1,500 copies, the live box set Elvis Costello & The Imposters: The Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!! will include a 16-track live CD culled form both nights at The Wiltern, plus a DVD of the full May 12 show, which included a guest appearance by The Bangles, and a 10-inch vinyl EP with four more live songs.

The super deluxe package also includes a 40-page hardcover book with candid and concert photos, a tour diary of Costello’s musings from each tour stop, a 20″ x 30″ concert tour poster and a limited edition postcard. This collection is housed in a  box featuring a spinning replica of “The Spectacular Spinning Songbook” on the front cover.

Universal also plans to release single- and double-CD versions next year.

  1. This looks pretty cool but I am a little confused about the DVD track list. From everything I have read this is supposed to be a full show. Trouble is, the published track list doesn’t jive with that night’s setlist:

    02. Heart Of The City
    03. Mystery Dance
    04. Uncomplicated – including Shotgun
    05. Radio, Radio
    06. I Want You – including I Say A Little Prayer – spin 1
    07. Monkey To Man – spin 2
    08. God Give Me Strength – spin 3
Detectives vs. Hoover Factory – spin 4
    09. Watching The Detectives
    10. And Your Bird Can Sing – dedicated to wheel spinner Bird
    11. Clubland – spin 5
    12. Tear Off Your Own Head (It’s A Doll Revolution) – sung by The Bangles
    Girl Jackpot – spin 6
    13. Girl – with The Bangles on backing vocals
    14. Next Time ‘Round – with The Bangles on backing vocals
    15. Out Of Time
    16. Everyday I Write The Book – spin 7
    17. Stella Hurt – spin 8
    Encore 1
    18. A Slow Drag With Josephine – EC solo
    19. Jimmie Standing In The Rain – EC solo, including Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?

    21. Wheels – spin 9
    22. Earthbound – spin 10
