Bob Mould announces new album ‘Silver Age,’ will play ‘Copper Blue’ on U.S. tour

Bob Mould will release his first new album in three years this September, a 10-track set called Silver Age that Merge Records likens to the “punishingly loud, melodically sparkling pop/rock vein of the Sugar catlalog” — a fitting comparison, since Mould will tour the album in the U.S. this fall by playing that band’s Copper Blue front-to-back.

The new studio album, due out Sept. 4 on Merge, finds Mould backed by his current touring band: Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster and Jason Narducy, formerly of Telekinesis, on bass.

The trio has been playing the Sugar’s 1992 debut Copper Blue sporadically at shows and festivals around the world this year, and, despite Mould’s original promise he’d only play the album a small number of times to commemorate its 20th anniversary, it’ll be featured each night of a 10-date U.S. tour this fall. Those shows will see a full performance of Copper Blue, plus “an additional set and encores mixing the new Silver Age material with Hüsker Dü, Sugar and Mould solo classics.”

The Sugar catalog is in the process of being reissued this month in the U.K. by Demon Music Group, while, in the U.S., Merge will release different configurations of the band’s two albums and lone EP, with less bonus material than the U.K. editions, on July 24.

  • Glad he added some more U.S. shows. I need to go to Chicago. Sugar is awesome and i wish they had more output.
