Midnight Oil preps career-spanning 2CD ‘Essential Oils’ compilation for fall release

Their box set may be on hold, but Australian rockers Midnight Oil do have a new release up their sleeves: In November, the band will issue a new 2CD, 36-track best-of titled Essential Oils, a truly career-spanning overview of the band’s catalog, sampling cuts from 1978’s self-titled debut through 2002 swan song Capricornia.

Midnight Oil has yet to officially announce the new comp — the band is expected to relaunch MidnightOil.com and unveil Essential Oils in the coming days — but the set is available for pre-order through Aussie retailer Sanity.com.au, which lists a Nov. 2 release date and includes the artwork and tracklist. It’s not yet clear whether this will be an international or Australia-only release.

With a hand-picked tracklist, Essential Oils presents Midnight Oil’s work chronologically, including at least one song — and as many as five, in the case of 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and Diesel and Dust — from each studio album, and even hitting pulling songs from the Bird Noises and Species Deceases EPs and the Real Thing hybrid studio/live album.

According to the product listing, Essential Oils “features remastered audio, liner notes by Rolling Stone magazine Senior Editor David Fricke and rare images from the Oils’ archive.”

  1. Earth And Sun And Moon is my favorite of their albums. Would be nice to see more tracks from that, but otherwise I love the tracklisting….can’t wait.

  2. Nice selection of tracks, but really hoping to see their remastered back catalog get the CD release they deserve.

  3. Seriously, what is the point of this compilation? Just ditch this and put out the albums remastered when possible. My money will be waiting to purchase them.
