Out of the blue today, Paul Westerberg slipped a new song into the world, a solo piano ballad called “My Road Now” that marks the former Replacements leader’s first new music in nearly two years —and you can stream and/or download it below right now.
Blogger Jodi Chromey tweeted today that she received the track via e-mail from Westerberg’s manager with permission to post it, which she did at I Will Dare.
The song is just the latest in a string of unconventional releases from Westerberg, and it’s his first new music since issuing a limited-edition 7-inch single — featuring “This Machine” and “Foolish Hand Shake,” plus the code to download the “epic” digital track “Grandpaboy’s Last Stand” — under the pseudonym Mr. F in October 2010
Prior to that, Westerberg had last released a six-song EP called PW & The Ghost Gloves Cat Wing Joy Boys in September 2009, which followed a string of self-released digital projects, including the 2008 album 49:00 and individual song offerings such as “3oclockreep,” “Finally Here Come,” “Bored of Edukation” and “Always in a Manger.”
