Video: Johnny Marr and Ronnie Wood perform The Smiths’ ‘How Soon Is Now?’

Johnny Marr was feted at the NME Awards in London on Wednesday night, winning the music mag’s “Godlike Genius” award and then taking the stage to perform tracks off his just-released solo album and a couple Smiths classics — including the band’s signature “How Soon Is Now?,” for which he was joined by none other than Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones. Check out footage of that performance right here, via the NME.

  1. Good god that’s bad.

    • Vocals could have been better, for sure, but otherwise it warmed my heart to see and hear it. Long live The Smith’s music!

  2. Jesus wept

  3. It’s just a fact… Marr can’t front. He should take a cue from Clarke and find someone with a golden voice that you can work with and crank out tunes.

I have always felt bad for the non-lead vocalists of a legendary band. They can’t easily go on tour playing the old hits and sound the same. Whereas Moz milks 4-5 Smiths songs every time he goes on tour. I have to be honest; I like Morrissey’s solo music, but if he didn’t play Smiths songs, I wouldn’t be paying $$ to see him live.

  4. Nobody sings it like Morrissey.

  5. Wow – that IS criminally vulgar.

  6. He also did ‘There’s a light that never…’ last night. Trying to find a video of it.

  7. Make it stop

2:41 in is ridiculous. No one is bigger than Morrissey in that band and now it’s quite obvious. Never even rated Marr as a decent guitarist. A couple good riffs never set the world off its axis.

  8. Batshiz Crazay

Even though Ron Wood is not a singer… maybe he should have sung instead anyways.

  9. wow, he should shut his mouth, this version has gone the wrong way.

  10. Milt Lang

The Love Spit Love version of this song is the only decent one besides the original. Give it a rest!

What were they thinking with the mix? Three guitarists and all you hear is the awful vocals.
