There’d been much speculation about who, if anyone, would fill in for the late Kurt Cobain should Nirvana choose to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Last night, the surviving members of the band — Kirst Novoselic, Dave Grohl and later addition Pat Smear — drafted a quartet of women to do that job.

The band played four songs at the Barclays Center induction, enlisting Joan Jett to handle “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon for “Aneurysm,” St. Vincent aka Annie Clark on “Lithium” and teen chart-topper Lorde taking on “All Apologies,” with the other three joining in, too.

After the ceremony, though, came the real treat. As Brooklyn Vegan reports, Nirvana played a 16-song set at a secret club gig in Brooklyn, with Jett, Clark and Gordon joined by Dinosaur Jr frontman J Mascis and Deer Tick’s John McCauley, each taking turns fronting the band.

Below, check out the setlists and some select video from the night.

Always wondered what happened to Don Johnson’s old Miami Vice suits. Now I know.

  3. bianca???

  4. Joan & Kim and the singer for St. Vincent killed it. Lorde was also really good, she’s a kid, cut her some slack.

Oh yes. Quite amazing job by Annie Clark. And the young lady has massive footie skills, too. Win bloody win!

  5. Not here, but there are so many negative reviews of Nirvana’s choice for singers–WOMEN. The no room for girls jamming club continues to grow, Plus, c’mon, Lorde was fine. I don’t listen to her–but Bruce Springsteen does–did you hear his Lorde? Kid can write.

  6. That’s not Lorde, it’s Tiffany circa 1987.
