‘120 Minutes’ Rewind: The Railway Children chat with Dave Kendall — 1990

The Railway Children

For this week’s “120 Minutes” Rewind, we revisit onetime Factory Records act The Railway Children, from which band members Gary Newby and Stephen Hull stopped by MTV to chat with host Dave Kendall in 1990 about their then-new, major-label third album, Native Place, which featured the modern-rock hit “Every Beat of the Heart.”

  1. Very underrated band (you can see by the lack of comments here) Unfortunately, Native Place was not their best effort and suffered from being over produced. Although their two previous albums, Reunion Wilderness and Recurrence are excellent!!!

  2. Recurrence was one of my favorite records back in high school. I thought the Railway Children and the Ocean Blue would be huge. Damn you “grundge”!

  3. I was really hoping this band would last forever. I love The Railway Children, they’re always on heavy rotation in my collection. Gary Newby’s voice is so sweet and I love his lyrics. I wish the band never broke up, they’re too awesome! Much love from Manila, Philippines!
