7-disc ‘Manchester North of England’ features Joy Division, Stone Roses, Oasis, more

Cherry Red Records has finalized the tracklist for its massive Manchester North of England box set, a 7-disc collection due out next month that features 146 songs spanning 1977 to 1993 by such fabled Mancunians as Joy Divison, New Order, The Stone Roses, Morrissey (but not The Smiths), The Fall and Oasis.

The collection — its full title is Manchester North Of England: A Story Of Independent Music | Greater Manchester 1977-1993 — is due out July 28, and is up for pre-order now via Amazon.co.uk. The set takes its name, and cover image, from Bop Cassettes’ 1988 compilation.

The box set traces Manchester’s musical legacy from, literally, the Buzzcocks to Oasis, with so much in between: A Certain Ratio, Durutti Column, 808 State, The Charlatans and many, many lesser-known acts. The collection isn’t all “blokes with guitars,” as Cherry Red puts it, but also includes reggae, soul, singer-songwriters, hip-hop, avant garde, techno/industrial and dance music.

The final tracklist is similar, but not the same, as the initial lineup that first surfaced in October. The biggest change is the ommission of The Smiths. While Morrissey appears on the final rundown, The Smiths’ “Hand in Glove” had been included on the initial tracklist, but is now nowhere to be found.

Check out the full tracklist below.
