Pet Shop Boys collect 55 singles on new 6LP or 3CD/2 Blu-ray collection “SMASH”

Pet Shop Boys

The Pet Shop Boys will collect 55 of their singles released between 1985 and 2020 — from debut single “West End Girls” to “I Don’t Wanna” off 2020’s Hotspot — in a brand-new collection due out in June that spreads the tracks across either six vinyl LPs or three CDs.

Rhino Records will release SMASH — The Singles 1985-2020 on June 16 in multiple digital and physical formats, including a deluxe 6LP vinyl edition and a 3CD/2 Blu-ray set, which also includes scores of music videos and extras, that are both available for pre-order now through Amazon.com.

The new singles collection was born out of a request from Warner Bros. for a vinyl version of the duo’s 1991 compilation Discography, since that was out-of-print, according to a post on the Pet Shop Boys’ Facebook page. Instead, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe suggested updating the collection to include every single the group had released to date.

With that in mind, SMASH collects 55 of the synthpop legends’ singles in chronological order. Acknowledging that the definition of a single has been muddied by tracks pushed to radio or streamed online that aren’t physically relapsed, the duo decided to include, from “Suburbia” onwards, only singles that were released on CD in the U.K., according to the Facebook post. And in the case of double A-side singles and EPs, “only the lead track which got radio plays has been included.”

Finally, the group says, all versions included on SMASH are 7-inch mixes that were serviced to radio, apart from “New York City Boy,” which is the American radio edit “preferred by Chris and Neil.”

The duo is slated to begin work on a new album and later this year will resume its “Dreamworld” greatest hits tour with dates in Europe. They’re also releasing an EP called Lost with five songs recorded in 2015; that’s due out April 14 and can be pre-ordered via Amazon.com and Apple Music.

  1. Also available on 3 cassettes from the Pet Shop Boys Store.

  2. What about all those great b-sides? Hopefully, they will put out a Smash 2! Or, an extended play Disco 5!

  3. Single Bilingual instead of Discoteca undermines the whole project.
