Erasure reissuing ‘The Innocents,’ rare club mixes, ‘Abba-esque’ remix EP

Erasure's Vince Clark and Andy Bell, circa 1988

Erasure is hopping aboard the reissue train this summer and fall, delivering a “21st anniversary” remaster of The Innocents, a CD of rare 1990 club mixes and a digital re-release of its Abba-esque remix EP.

Originally released in 1988, The Innocents — Erasure’s breakthrough third album, and first UK No. 1 — will be reissued on Oct. 26 in “a standard and a deluxe edition.” Neither the band nor Mute Records has revealed the tracklist or what bonus material might be included.

The duo, however, does have a blog on its site called In Search of the Innocents dedicated to tracking down and interviewing every person who worked on the original album.

The reissue will be preceded on Oct. 12 by an EP — available on CD and as a download — featuring new remixes of the album’s third track, “Phantom Bride,” by Almighty, Frankmusik, Dogmatix and Erasure’s own Vince Clarke.

For remix fans, Erasure has two other releases slated for Aug. 10.

On the Erasure.Club CD and digital EP, the band has compiled remastered versions of six of the seven rare club mixes it sent out to DJs in 1990 on three separate promo-only 12-inches (see tracklist below). The collection originally was to include the seventh mix — the “Who Needs Love (Like That)” (Winnie Cooper Mix) by Fortran 5 — but Mute was unable to get legal clearance for its inclusion.

On the same day, Erasure will reissue its 1992 EP Abba-esque: The Remixes as “a special download bundle” (see tracklist below). That set, originally issued on CD and vinyl, featured mixes of the four songs featured on the duo’s EP of Abba covers released that same year.
