Flaming Lips release cover of Stone Roses’ debut LP today — but good luck finding one

The Flaming Lips

It’s the Black Friday installment of Record Store Day today, and one of the most sought-after titles no doubt will be the long-rumored full-album cover of The Stone Roses’ 1989 debut LP by The Flaming Lips and their friends — a release on multi-color vinyl that’s limited to just 500 copies and isn’t actually an officially sanctioned Record Store Day release.

In fact, Record Store Day’s Facebook page warmed this week that the album — which features Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, Poliça, New Fumes and more — “didn’t come through us” and is “super-duper limited. They were most likely sold out before some stores even knew where to get them. Be nice.”

The Lips themselves don’t appear to have ever formally announced the release on their website, but The Future Heart has carefully tracked the genesis of the album, which is credited to The Flaming Lips and Friends and is titled The Time Has Come to Shoot You Down… What a Sound. Each vinyl copy of the album is reportedly a unique, one-of-a-kind design.

If this release is anything like the Lips and Friends’ previous full-album cover of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, a future release on both CD and as a digital download is likely.

Below, check out the full tracklist and stream New Fumes’ cover of “I Am the Resurrection.”

  1. Great concept but shocking execution.
I hope the other tracks are better.

  2. I haven’t given a shit about a new Flaming Lips release in way more than a decade. Can’t believe anyone still takes them seriously.

  3. Blame it on Pitchfork

  4. The Terror was the first good thing they have released since Yoshimi and it was an experimental. I can’t keep up with all their half baked side projects either, the movie was cheap and silly and that Dark Side collaboration was terrible. I really wish they would just focus on releasing a really good album. It seems like all this other crap is a smoke screen for lack of ideas.

i’m a massive roses fan,and thought a cover of the best album ever was a great idea, but, fuck me,this is really really wank!!! i just hope like salford that the other tracks are better!

  6. Hey guys,
For what it’s worth, instead of dissing the Flaming Lips’ output the last few years, you could do yourself a favor and listen to the 5.1 mix of the album Embryonic that came out a few years ago. It was probably the best thing they’d done since The Soft Bulletin.

  7. Kept listening to this hoping it would get better but it didn’t. I cannot understand why they would even release this…I have only heard of this through my knowledge of the Roses so am not familiar with their other stuff but this is hardly a hook…

  8. I like this idea, but for love of god, why would you handle a record limited to 500 copies that way? :(

  9. Rusty James

Huge Roses fan for life here, and liker of TFL, but this LP is an abortion, as in TFL should have caned this upon realizing it sounds like something a couple of untalented college stoners created on their macbook. That would probably be better. Find a guitar Lips!!! waste o money!

  10. Just came across this in my search of Stone Roses covers – pretty damn good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1boP0QyZ7o
