Depeche Mode’s global Tour of the Universe officially opens Sunday in Tel Aviv, Israel, but the pioneering electro act offered fans a sneak preview of the production a couple nights ago with a warm-up show in Luxembourg.
The show found Dave Gahan and Co. taking the stage to the instrumental “Esque” (a Sounds of the Universe deluxe edition bonus track and probable future b-side), before launching into a 22-song set naturally heavy on Sounds of the Universe material, plus a heaping of classic and more recent DM cuts.
Most notable, for longtime fans, is the return to the set of Music for the Masses’ “Strangelove” (complete with soft-core porn accompaniment on the video screen) and the Black Celebration favorite “Fly on the Windscreen,” not to mention the choice closer: Violator gem “Waiting for the Night.” (See videos below.)
The tour runs through Europe through mid-July, then crosses over to North America beginning July 24 in Toronto. The fall sees the band in Mexico before returning to Europe for a second go-around. And in February, DM plays Russia.
