Nirvana ‘Nevermind’ 20th anniversary reissue to include Butch Vig’s original mix

The mammoth 4CD/1DVD 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana’s game-changing Nevermind will include producer Butch Vig’s original, rejected mix of the album, plus the band’s initial Smart Studios demos and a full 1991 Halloween concert on both CD and DVD, Universal Music Enterprises announced this morning.

Although the label still hasn’t revealed the tracklist for the previously announced set — which arrives Sept. 27 — today’s news release offers fresh details on the Super Deluxe Edition. According to the label, the box set includes “literally dozens of previously unreleased recordings, obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, radio sessions, studio rarities and live recordings.”

UPDATE 7/27/11: See full tracklist below, via the NME.

Among the features of the expanded Nevermind:

  • Original album fully remastered, plus the accompanying studio and live B-sides
  • First full release of the pre-Nevermind demos recorded at Vig’s Smart Studios in Wisconsin
  • “Boombox recordings” of early band rehearsals, which include early versions of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “On a Plain” and more
  • The Devonshire Mixes, the full album as produced and mixed by Vig, as opposed to the more polished, commercially released version that was produced by Vig and mixed by Andy Wallace
  • A pair of previously unreleased BBC recordings
  • A 90-page book “full of rarely and never before seen photos, documents and various other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era.”

Universal also will release a slimmed-down 2CD Deluxe Edition and a 4LP 180-gram vinyl edition that each feature 40 tracks, which include the remastered album, the B-sides, the Smart Studio demos, the “boombox” rehearsals and the BBC sessions.

As for DVD in the Super Deluxe Edition, it will include all four of the official Nevermind videos, plus the previously unreleased Halloween concert. According to Universal, that performance was transferred from 16mm film and multi-track  audio and is the only known Nirvana concert shot to film. It will be available in 1080p hi-def with uncompressed 5.1 Surround sound.

  1. Might “Endless, Nameless” be restored to the first disc?

  2. Its great the Halloween Paramount live show is coming out in full on DVD but was there really the need for the CD of it as well? Especially given that some of live B sides already included on one disc are from that show?

Also very sprised there’s no Sound City recordings of Old Age , Verse Chorus Verse , Sappy included. That seems just bizarre.

I wasn’t really expecting any “lost” tunes but thought they might have found some improvs or something.
Seem to rmber Butch Vig mentioning some tune called “Song In D” – obviously he must have been mistaken.
