Midnight Oil details huge new 12-disc box set: Demos, rarities, B-sides, hours of live video

Back in February, when Aussie rock powerhouse Midnight Oil announced its now-underway global reunion tour, the band also revealed plans for not one but three giant box sets: a collection of the band’s 13 albums and EPs on vinyl, another compiling those releases on CD plus a DVD of videos, and a third featuring a truckload of unreleased material.

But that third collection, a 12 CD/DVD set called The Overflow Tank, was only vaguely described, with no tracklist to reveal the nature or origin of the previously unreleased music. Now, though, as the box sets’ release dates approach, the Oils have pulled the curtain off the big one, revealing a full running order that spans nearly 150 tracks and two full documentaries.

The full contents of The Overflow Tank can also finally be revealed – putting to end months of conjecture among hardcore Oils fans about what “unreleased and rare” material would be included. The tank will include 4 CDs and 8 DVDs with songs stretching from 1970s home recordings through unreleased tracks from “10-1” and “Blue Sky Mining” to cover versions and B-sides from the 1990s. Among the DVD contents are an incendiary Oils set from 1981’s Tanelorn Festival, a full 1994 stadium concert in South Africa, an “MTV Unplugged” performance and their iconic mid-80’s gig on Sydney’s Goat Island.

Release dates may vary between online retailers, but the band reports the three box sets will be released first in Australasia on May 12, and then, on May 26, in Europe. In the U.S., The Full Tank — the 13-disc set with all of the albums on CD, plus a bonus DVD — and The Overflow Tank also will be released on May 26, and The Vinyl Collection will follow on June 9.

For Oils fans in the U.S., The Vinyl Collection — featuring 13 180-gram LPs — can be pre-ordered via PledgeMusic in special bundles that include with exclusive Midnight Oil T-shirts and/or turntable slipmats.

This tour became the creative catalyst for the writing and recording of Midnight Oil’s “Diesel And Dust” album. “Blackfella/Whitefella” is the documentation of those experiences featuring the music of Midnight Oil and Warumpi Band along with the videos for “The Dead Heart” and “Beds Are Burning.”
