New releases: Alison Moyet, Ride, David Bowie, Simple Minds, Big Star and more

Record Rack: A round-up of the week’s new albums, expanded reissues and/or box sets, appearing each Monday on Slicing Up Eyeballs. All releases due out this Friday unless noted.


Alison Moyet

BACKSTORY: The voice of Yazoo returns this week with her ninth solo album, a 10-song set produced by Guy Sigsworth and featuring the songs “Reassuring Pinches,” “Happy Giddy,” “Lover, Go” and “The English U.”



RELEASE: Weather Diaries
BACKSTORY: The British shoegaze legends this week release their much-anticipated first new album in 21 years, an 11-song collection that was preceded by the singles “Charm Assault” and “Home is a Feeling.”


David Bowie

RELEASE: Cracked Actor: Live Los Angeles ’74
BACKSTORY: Released as a 3LP set on Record Store Day, this previously unissued live set from Sept. 5, 1974, will be available this week as a 2CD set and digitally. Features 19 songs, inculding “Space Oddity” and “Diamond Dogs.”


Simple Minds

RELEASE: Acoustic In Concert
BACKSTORY: Jim Kerr & Co. this week release a CD/DVD (or standalone Blu-ray) document of a concert last year in London featuring unplugged renditions of “Promised You a Miracle” and “Alive and Kicking.”


Matthew Sweet

RELEASE: Tomorrow Forever
BACKSTORY: Matthew Sweet this week releases his first new album in six years, a 17-song, Kickstarter-funded record featuring tracks such as “Trick,” “You Knew Me,” “Nobody Knows,” “Pretty Please” and more.


Jason Loewenstein

RELEASE: Spooky Action
BACKSTORY: The Sebadoh member this week follows up his 2002 solo debut with a new 13-song record featuring songs such as “Machinery,” “Superstitious,” “Navigate,” “Correction” and “The One.”


Big Star

RELEASE: The Best of Big Star
BACKSTORY: The power-pop legends are memorialized this week on a new single CD best-of (also available on vinyl) collecting such favorites as “September Gurls,” “In the Street,” “Thirteen,” “Jesus Christ” and more.



RELEASE: The Singles
BACKSTORY: The German art-rock act is treated this week to its first-ever singles complilation, collecting 23 songs including “Halleluwah,” “Vitamin C,” “I Want More,” “Hunters and Collectors,” “Mushroom” and more.
