David Byrne and 164 other musical acts to play the Coachella festival this year

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival unveiled the mammoth lineup for its two-weekend extravaganza this April, a bill that features legendary Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and 164 other musical acts, some whose names are written in really, really small type.

This year’s festival — set for April 13-15 and 20-22 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, Calif. — will be headlined by The Weeknd, Beyoncé and Eminem, with second-liners that include Byrne (with his weird new stage set-up?), St. Vincent, Haim, Vince Staples, Portugal. The Man, Jamiroquai, Post Malone, Migos, The War on Drugs, A Perfect Circle, Cardi B, Fleet Foxes and more.

Also on the bill, in increasingly smaller type: the reunited Belly, plus Chic featuring Nile Rodgers, Jean-Michel Jarre, Perfume Genius, Angel Olson, X Japan, Priests, Kamasi Washington, Japanese Breakfast, Helado Negro, Chromeo, Soulwax, King Krule, Ron Gallo, Alvvays and a ton more.

Line-up reminds me of a joke: How did the hipster geologist lose a hand? He touched volcanic rock before it was cool.

So I can see great new bands from 300 yards away, or I can go see them in club shows where they will get infinitely more money from my patronage, the drinks will be cheaper, and I won’t have to walk around some coked up sorority waif in a Native American headdress shouting at her Adderalled boyfriend for forgetting their Dr Bronner organic hemp oil suntan lotion. Also, who gives a fuck about Beyonce.

And no, I didn’t forget the question mark. It was rhetorical. Because no one who isn’t a soccer mom with several thousands of dollars invested in various designer brands of yoga pants gives a single fuck about Beyonce.

  3. Meh, 4 bands/artists I would want to see…

  4. All of these comments are spot on.

Buy my tickets? Please. Ha ha ha. Alt-J…amazing live but more for an inside venue. Michael Bird…you are absolutely right. We look forward to the in-between shows now that it’s two weekends. The lineup is certainly evolving or I’m getting older and out of touch…”reality” sets in.
